The department is in charge of the pre clinical courses (Second and Third Years of the Medical Programme). It is also responsible for the entire biomedical sciences Faculty requirement courses of the Nursing and Public & Environmental Health Programmes; as well as some lecturers contribute to deliver programs for clinical years and master degree programme.
The teaching staff is composed of nine Cuban visiting lecturers, two Teaching Assistants and the lab technician. Seven of the Cuban visiting lecturers are the replacements of the former staff.
The department is located in the Gambia College School of Nursing & Midwifery. We have three locals as staff offices and two classrooms. We also have a multidisciplinary lab for the practical activities of Biochemistry, Physiology and Hystology with a capacity of 20 students and a Computer Lab donated by NGO WassuKafo Gambia with 14 computers that services all medical students from different years (preclinical and clinical) and the nursing and public health students as well. The department has also a Gross Anatomy Laboratory for teaching practical classes of Gross Anatomy which is allocated within the Edwards Francis Small Teaching Hospital (EFSTH).
